Below are brief explanations of each observance celebrated on April 4.

404 Day (EFF)
404 Day was launched by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in 2014 to raise awareness about internet censorship in public schools and libraries. The name is a nod to the “404 Not Found” error message that appears when a web page cannot be loaded. The EFF uses the day to draw attention to how internet filters, required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), often end up blocking legitimate educational content that students and library patrons should be able to access freely.
Every Day Is Tag Day
Every Day Is Tag Day* (First Saturday in April) is a nationwide campaign created by American Humane to encourage pet owners to fit their animals with an ID tag and/or a microchip. An up-to-date tag or microchip can make all the difference in bringing a lost pet home.
Holy Saturday
Holy Saturday* (Saturday of Holy Week) is the day between Good Friday, when Christians commemorate the death of Jesus, and Easter Sunday, when they celebrate his resurrection. It represents a period of waiting and stillness, marking the time Jesus was believed to lie in the tomb. For many Christians, it is a day of reflection, and some churches hold special vigil services after nightfall to prepare for aster.

International Pillow Fight Day
International Pillow Fight Day* (First Saturday in April) started in 2008 as part of the Urban Playground Movement, a global effort to bring spontaneous fun and playfulness back into public spaces. National Chicken Cordon Bleu Day
National Chicken Cordon Bleu Day celebrates a satisfying and distinctly American dish. Chicken Cordon Bleu is a flattened chicken breast wrapped around ham and cheese, then breaded and fried or baked. Despite its French-sounding name, cordon bleu meaning blue ribbon, it did not originate at the famous Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. The earliest known recipe appeared in a March 1964 edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer, by food writer Stanley Demos, who came up with the idea of using chicken instead of the traditional veal.
National Handmade Day
National Handmade Day* (First Saturday in April) was founded by Amy Bierstedt of From Scratch Farm in Texas and first observed in 2018. National Picky Eaters Day was created by frozen seafood brand SeaPak in 2025 to help parents celebrate small mealtime victories and find ways to expand their kids’ food horizons. According to a SeaPak survey of 2,000 parents, the average American parent spends around 67 hours a year negotiating at the dinner table, with the most common reasons kids reject food being a dislike of vegetables (37%), smell (33%), and appearance (32%). And picky eating doesn’t always end in childhood. 26% of the parents surveyed admitted they are still picky eaters themselves today.

Ramen’s origins trace back to China, arriving in Japan via Chinese immigrants in the late 19th or early 20th century, where it evolved into a cornerstone of Japanese cuisine. In 1958, Momofuku Ando of Nissin Foods invented instant ramen, making the dish accessible to everyone and turning it into a cultural sensation around the globe.

National School Librarian Day honors school librarians for their essential role in helping students with research, organizing resources, and fostering a love of reading. They support both print and digital media, acting as a bridge between students and knowledge. National Walk Around Things Day
National Walk Around Things Day carries both a literal and a figurative message. Literally, it encourages people to slow down and sidestep the small obstacles in their path, whether a puddle, a park bench, or a sleeping pet, and to take a leisurely walk around the neighborhood for exercise and mental clarity. Figuratively, it invites a moment of strategic withdrawal from stress, arguments, or uncomfortable situations, stepping back to gain a fresh perspective before tackling them head-on.
Tangible Karma Day
Tangible Karma Day* (First Saturday in April) was created in 2005 by Amber Nicole Dilger, whose core idea was to encourage recycling and reusing. The day invites people to declutter their homes and pass on unneeded items to others, based on the belief that positive actions create a ripple effect of goodwill that finds its way back to you.
Tell a Lie Day
Tell a Lie Day lands just a few days after April Fool’s Day. It invites people to tell harmless, playful fibs for fun. It’s an excuse to joke around with friends and family, spin tall tales, or try to pull off a convincing bluff, all in good humor. Think of it as a low-stakes cousin to April Fools’ Day, just without the elaborate pranks.
Victims of Violence Wholly Day
Victims of Violence Wholly Day marks the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. Since its founding, the day has grown in popularity and is now celebrated not only across Europe but also in Africa and beyond.
World Rat Day
World Rat Day is observed on April 4th each year, with the date chosen as a tribute to the Ratlist, one of the oldest online mailing lists dedicated to pet rats. The holiday was established in 2002 by members of this community who hoped to change public perception of rats and erase the bad reputation inherited from their wild cousins. It aims to recognize rats as intelligent, clean, and social companion animals while challenging common misconceptions and promoting responsible pet ownership.
