July 3, 2026, is the 184th day of the year, with 181 days remaining, and it falls on a Friday — the first Friday of July and the eve of Independence Day — in the twenty-seventh week of the year.

With 15 national and international days on the calendar, July 3 arrives in peak summer heat, making Air Conditioning Appreciation Day feel particularly well-timed. International Plastic Bag Free Day calls for eliminating one of the ocean’s most pervasive pollutants, V.I. Emancipation Day marks the 178th anniversary of the 1848 slave revolt on St. Croix, and Comic Sans Day asks design professionals to relax their standards for exactly one Friday. National Fried Clam Day has an interesting origin story when Howard Tarr invented the dish on July 3, 1916, in Essex, Massachusetts — making today its 110th birthday.

National and International Days on July 3

Whether you’re thanking your air conditioner, refusing a plastic bag, typing in Comic Sans, eating fried clams and beans, staying out of the sun, complimenting your reflection, grabbing a craft beer ahead of the Fourth, dropping a painted rock for a stranger, or starting a conversation that matters, here’s the story behind each of these July 3 celebrations.

Air Conditioning Appreciation Day

Air Conditioning Appreciation Day recognizes the comfort brought by air conditioning. First developed in the early 20th century, AC systems have transformed living, working, and healthcare environments. The observance also reminds people to perform regular maintenance to keep systems running efficiently—especially during the heat of summer.

American Redneck Day

American Redneck Day is a good-natured celebration of rural, working-class American culture, honoring values like self-reliance, hard work, and close community ties. The holiday is widely credited to Todd Lyford, who is said to have created it in 2006 with the intention of celebrating rather than mocking, giving people a dedicated day to take pride in country living. While the word “redneck” carries a complicated history, the day reminds us that the people who work the land, build things with their hands, and gather around a backyard grill have always been the backbone of American life.

American Sparkling Wine Day

American Sparkling Wine Day was founded by Davon D. E. Hatchett (known as “The Bubbleista”), a sparkling wine writer, wine law attorney, and CEO of Bon Vie du Vin. The holiday was created to fill a gap, as wine holidays already exist for Champagne, Cava, Prosecco, and others, but none had ever been dedicated to American sparkling wine. July 3rd was chosen for its proximity to the 4th of July, making American bubbly the perfect companion to Independence Day festivities.

Comic Sans Day

Comic Sans Day* (First Friday in July) got started by Dutch radio DJs in 2009. This lighthearted observance pokes fun at the Comic Sans font while encouraging people to use it freely for one day. Created in the mid-1990s by Vincent Connare for Microsoft, Comic Sans was designed to be friendly and readable. Over time, it became known more for its overuse than its charm, making this day a mix of mockery and celebration.

Disobedience Day

Disobedience Day encourages questioning the rules and reflecting on the importance of civil disobedience in promoting change. Celebrated each July 3, the day honors the spirit of defiance against unjust authority and invites people to challenge norms with purpose and integrity.

International Drop a Rock Day

International Drop a Rock Day was created in 2015 by the Word Rocks Project to encourage people to paint rocks with uplifting messages and leave them in public places for others to find. It’s a simple, creative way to spread joy, connect communities, and spark unexpected moments of happiness.

International Plastic Bag Free Day

International Plastic Bag Free Day got started in 2009 by Zero Waste Europe. This day urges people to stop using single-use plastic bags. Now part of the Break Free From Plastic movement, it highlights the environmental cost of plastic waste and supports sustainable alternatives. Cities and countries worldwide use this day to promote bans and behavioral change.

National Chocolate Wafer Day

National Chocolate Wafer Day: These thin, layered treats—also known as sugar wafers—have been popular since the 1800s. Filled with cream and often chocolate-flavored, they became widely produced in North America by the early 20th century. July 3 is a day to enjoy this nostalgic snack that has long delighted kids and tea-time fans alike.

National Compliment Your Mirror Day

National Compliment Your Mirror Day invites people to offer positive affirmations in the mirror. It promotes self-esteem, gratitude, and mental well-being, especially as part of daily routines. It’s a moment to pause and reflect on your strengths instead of your flaws.

National Eat Your Beans Day

National Eat Your Beans Day: Beans have been cultivated for thousands of years and remain a staple in diets across the world. From kidney and black beans to lentils and chickpeas, they’re packed with nutrients and adaptable to countless cuisines.

National Fried Clam Day

National Fried Clam Day got submitted by Woodman’s of Essex in 2015 to celebrate an iconic New England dish. Lawrence “Chubby” Woodman is credited with frying the first batch of clams in batter on July 3, 1916. Often served at seaside clam shacks and roadside stands, fried clams—especially in clam rolls—are a regional summer favorite.

🍤 There is a very similar day, National Deep Fried Clams Day, celebrated on November 1.

National Independent Beer Run Day

National Independent Beer Run Day was founded in 2019 by the Brewers Association. It encourages beer lovers to support local, independent craft breweries. Timed just before the Fourth of July, it blends patriotic themes with community support by inspiring people to pick up American-made brews before their celebrations.

National Stay Out of the Sun Day

National Stay Out of the Sun Day was created in 2005 to promotes sun safety by encouraging people to limit direct exposure during peak UV hours. It’s a gentle reminder to protect skin from premature aging and damage while still enjoying summer—ideally from the shade, indoors, or with proper sunscreen.

StartTheConversation Day

StartTheConversation Day was founded in 2019 by Social Work Diva to encourage open, stigma-free discussions around emotional well-being. It emphasizes connection, understanding, and reaching out to others, especially during National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

V.I. Emancipation Day

Virgin Islands Emancipation Day commemorates the 1848 uprising on St. Croix in which over 9,000 enslaved people marched on Fort Frederik and demanded their freedom. The movement was organized by Moses Gottlieb, known as “General Buddhoe,” whose disciplined and unified action forced Governor-General Peter von Scholten to declare universal emancipation. This made the Danish West Indies the first place on what would become American soil to abolish slavery, seventeen years before it was abolished in the United States.
