The day’s sweetest celebration, National Candy Day, takes center stage alongside events that honor literature, promote health awareness, and celebrate creativity and play.

Below is a list of all national days taking place on November 4, each with a brief explanation.

National & International Days on November 4

National Candy Day celebrates candies in all possible forms—from chocolates and caramels to lollipops and gummies. The exact origin of this date is unknown, but the idea of a “Candy Day” first appeared in 1916 when the National Confectioners Association (NCA) introduced it as a way to promote candy sales.

National Chicken Lady Day honors Dr. Marthenia “Tina” Dupree, a motivational speaker and educator whose career has inspired countless people to pursue personal and professional growth. The day was officially established in 2001, after President George W. Bush invited Dupree to the White House to recognize her community work. Known as “The Chicken Lady” for her 12 years as Director of Community Relations and Training at the world’s second-largest chicken restaurant chain, Dupree used her platform to promote education, leadership, and empowerment. Beyond her corporate role, she devoted her life to helping others find confidence and purpose through training and public speaking programs.

National Easy-Bake Oven Day honors the iconic toy that has inspired generations of young bakers. Founded in 2017 by author and toy historian Todd Coopee, the day marks the anniversary of the oven’s original release in 1963 by Kenner Products. Invented by Ronald Howes, who modeled its design after New York City street vendors keeping pretzels warm under heat lamps, the Easy-Bake Oven used light bulbs as a safe heat source for children to bake their own creations. Over the decades, it has evolved with modern technology but remains a timeless symbol of creativity and hands-on learning, earning a place in the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2006.

National Waiting for the Barbarians Day honors the influential 1980 novel Waiting for the Barbarians by South African author and Nobel laureate J. M. Coetzee. The observance invites readers to reflect on the book’s exploration of power, morality, and human conscience. The story follows a magistrate in a fictional empire who begins to question authority after witnessing injustice toward the so-called “barbarians.” Written during South Africa’s apartheid era, the novel reminds us of how fear and control can distort society.

Use Your Common Sense Day reminds people to pause, think clearly, and rely on good judgment before acting. The observance was founded in 2015 by Bud Bilanich, a career mentor, motivational speaker, and author known as “The Common Sense Guy.” He created the day to encourage practical thinking in everyday life, emphasizing that knowing what to do and actually doing it are not always the same. The date honors the birthday of American humorist Will Rogers, who famously said, “Common sense ain’t that common.”
