National & International Days on November 14
International Girls Day by Kappa Delta was established by the sorority Kappa Delta in 2009. The day focuses on encouraging girls to believe in themselves and reach their full potential under the slogan “She Can Do Anything.” Kappa Delta chapters often partner with the Girl Scouts of the USA, one of the sorority’s national philanthropies, to organize local events such as confidence-building workshops, goal-setting activities, campus visits, and badge-earning opportunities.
👧 This observance is distinct from the United Nations’ International Day of the Girl Child, which takes place globally on October 11.
Loosen Up, Lighten Up Day (LULU) reminds people to slow down and make space for laughter and ease. Created by Stephanie West Allen in the early 2000s, it encourages a healthy balance between ambition and rest. Stress and constant pressure can dull creativity and joy, while humor and lightness restore both. This observance teaches that letting go is an act of care that helps us stay grounded, kind, and fully present in everyday life.
National American Teddy Bear Day highlights the American origin of the teddy bear, tracing back to President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1902 hunting trip. His decision to spare a bear cub inspired a political cartoon and led Morris and Rose Michtom to create the first “Teddy’s Bear.” The day honors this act of compassion and the creation of a beloved American toy that later became one of the most popular toy in the world.
🐻 There is a separate National Teddy Bear Day observed on September 9, which celebrates the toy’s global popularity.
National Donor Sabbath* (November 14-16, 2025 – observed from Friday through Sunday two weekends before Thanksgiving). During these three days, faith communities across the United States join to raise awareness about organ, eye, and tissue donation. The observance brings together religious leaders, donor families, and recipients to reflect on the shared values of generosity, compassion, and saving lives.
National DTC (Direct-To-Consumer) Friday* (observed two weeks before Black Friday) celebrates the growing shift toward shopping directly from brands rather than through traditional retailers. Founded in 2019 by The DTX Company, led by former AOL and Google executive Tim Armstrong, the observance highlights how digital innovation has changed the way people buy and sell products. It promotes transparency, fair pricing, and stronger connections between consumers and the companies they support. Observed two weeks before Black Friday, the day invites shoppers to discover mission-driven DTC brands that prioritize quality, purpose, and direct customer relationships over mass retail volume.
National Family PJ Day, founded in 2019 by Soma, celebrates comfort, rest, and family connection. Taking place during Sleep Comfort Month, it highlights the connection between rest, comfort, and family life. The day encourages people to pause their busy routines, spend time together at home, and embrace the coziness of soft pajamas.
National Pickle Day began in 1949 when the Pickle Packers Association (today known as Pickle Packers International) launched International Pickle Week, a promotion so successful it later inspired today’s single-day observance.
National Seat Belt Day, founded in 2019 by Volvo, Uber, and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), promotes the importance of buckling up every time we’re on the road. The date commemorates Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin’s 1959 invention of the three-point seat belt—a breakthrough that has saved millions of lives. The day reminds drivers and passengers alike that this simple habit remains one of the most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in a crash.
National Spicy Guacamole Day honors the fiery version of Mexico’s classic avocado dip, made with chili peppers like jalapeños or serranos for an extra kick. Its “parent” celebration, National Guacamole Day, takes place on September 16.
Operating Room Nurse Day, established in 1989 by Terry Bransted and supported by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), recognizes the skill and commitment of nurses who work in surgical settings. These professionals care for patients before, during, and after operations, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and teamwork in one of the most demanding areas of healthcare.
World Diabetes Day, established by the International Diabetes Federation and recognized by the United Nations in 2007, focuses on raising global awareness about diabetes and its impact on millions of lives. The date marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, one of the co-discoverers of insulin. The day promotes education, early detection, and access to care, highlighting the importance of prevention and continued research to improve life for those affected by diabetes.
