National and International Days on August 3

American Family Day* (First Sunday in August) was officially established as a state holiday in Arizona in 1977 and encourages families to spend quality time together—without the distraction of gifts. The day promotes togetherness through shared experiences, relaxation, and open conversation. It was created to strengthen family bonds and offer a reminder to appreciate the people closest to us.

Big Forehead Day challenges negative beauty standards by encouraging people to embrace larger foreheads with confidence. Celebrated humorously as “Five-Head Day” by some, the observance blends pop culture, history, and body positivity. In some traditions, a prominent forehead symbolizes wisdom or fortune. Historical references even suggest it was once considered a sign of nobility and intellect, especially in 15th-century Europe.

Clean Your Floors Day is a practical reminder to take care of one of the most heavily used parts of any building. Floors harbor dirt, allergens, and bacteria—making regular cleaning essential for health and safety. It also helps preserve flooring materials and keeps living and working spaces welcoming. The day was established by Holloway House, the company behind Quick Shine floor products.

CLOVES Syndrome Awareness Day brings attention to a rare condition—Congenital Lipomatous Overgrowth, Vascular malformations, Epidermal nevi, and Scoliosis/Skeletal anomalies (CLOVES). First recognized as a distinct syndrome in 2007, CLOVES is caused by genetic mutations during early development. The day supports those affected by the condition while promoting awareness, early diagnosis, and improved care strategies.

National Friendship Day* (First Sunday in August) was originally founded by Hallmark in 1919 to encourage people to send cards to friends. Though the idea faded over time, it experienced a revival in 1998 when Winnie the Pooh was named the UN’s official Ambassador of Friendship. The United Nations later adopted International Friendship Day for July 30, but the U.S. continues to observe it on the first Sunday of August. The day celebrates new and old connections, shared memories, and the important role friends play throughout life.

National Georgia Day honors the U.S. state of Georgia, the last of the original 13 colonies and the fourth to ratify the Constitution. Known as the Peach State, Georgia is also a major producer of pecans, peanuts, and blueberries. Beyond agriculture, the state played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement and remains a cultural powerhouse with Atlanta serving as a hub for business, entertainment, and history.

National Grab Some Nuts Day invites people to enjoy all types of edible nuts—from almonds to walnuts to pistachios. While the origin of the day remains unclear, it has sometimes sparked confusion between culinary nuts and the metal hardware variety. Regardless, this food-focused day reminds people to snack smart, since nuts are high in healthy fats, protein, and essential nutrients.

National Hair Gloss Day was founded in 2022 by Redken in partnership with National Day Calendar. It highlights the benefits of gloss treatments for hair health and shine. Glosses add subtle color, smooth the hair cuticle, and improve vibrancy without the commitment of permanent dye. The day also honors hairstylists who use their craft to help people feel confident and look their best.

National Sisters Day(First Sunday in August) falls every year on the first Sunday in August, celebrating the deep bond of sisterhood—from shared secrets and childhood memories to unwavering support in adulthood. Established in 1996 by Tricia Eleogram and her sister in Memphis, Tennessee, this day honors the irreplaceable role sisters play in shaping our lives and offering lasting friendship.

National Watermelon Day honors one of summer’s most iconic fruits—cultivated in Africa over 5,000 years ago and even found in ancient Egyptian tombs as a hydration source in dry seasons. This juicy melon is about 92 % water, delivers vitamin A, vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene, and offers refreshment that’s low in calories yet rich in flavor.

Psychic Day(First Sunday in August) has been celebrated since 2021 to recognize the role of intuition, extrasensory perception, and psychic traditions in human experience. It invites reflection on the history and practice of psychic insight—from ancient oracles to modern forms of spiritual exploration—and also ties in with National Increase Your Psychic Powers Day, observed on October 31.
