August 13 National Days

From the art of calligraphy and prosecco wine to celebrating left-handers and fine fillet mignon cuts, August 13 offers a mix of observances that blend appreciation, education, and fun. While most of today’s celebrations are fixed to this date, World Calligraphy Day shifts each year and is tied to the second full week in August.

Here’s a look at the four national and international days celebrated on August 13.

National and International Days on August 13

International Left Handers Day has been celebrated annually on August 13 since 1976, thanks to Dean R. Campbell, founder of the Left-Handers Club. The day honors the roughly 7–10% of the population that is left-handed and aims to raise awareness of the everyday challenges they face in a predominantly right-handed world. It also calls attention to the need for better tools, designs, and educational support for left-handed individuals, while celebrating the uniqueness of their experience.

National Filet Mignon Day is all about savoring one of the most tender cuts of beef. The name “filet mignon,” which means “dainty fillet” in French, became popular in the early 20th century, partly through the writings of American author O. Henry. This cut comes from the small end of the tenderloin, a muscle that sees little use, making it exceptionally tender. Filet mignon is a staple of fine dining and is often paired with sauces or wrapped in bacon to elevate its naturally mild flavor.

National Prosecco Day was founded by Riondo Prosecco to toast the joys of late summer. Prosecco is a sparkling wine from northeastern Italy, made mostly with the Glera grape. Its light, fruity character—featuring notes of pear, apple, and citrus—comes from the Charmat method of fermentation, which uses stainless steel tanks. Unlike Champagne, Prosecco’s production style keeps it more affordable while maintaining its festive feel.

World Calligraphy Day(celebrated on the Wednesday of the second full week in August) was created by the Manuscript Pen Company to promote the timeless beauty of handwriting. In an increasingly digital world, this day encourages people to reconnect with the expressive and artistic potential of penmanship. From ancient scrolls to modern art, calligraphy remains a cherished craft that invites creativity and mindfulness.
