National Columnists’ Day was established by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists to honor columnists and their role in informing the public, shaping opinion, and holding power accountable. It also commemorates the death of Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle, who was killed in Okinawa on April 18, 1945. National Exercise Day was first observed in 2020 and created by Dr. Jeuse Bernard Saint-Fleur, who wanted to raise awareness about the fact that exercise can actually save lives. National Lineman Appreciation Day
National Lineman Appreciation Day honors the electrical lineworkers who maintain the power grid, often in dangerous conditions and extreme weather. The day was the brainchild of journeyman lineman Bill Bosch, who felt the public was largely unaware of what lineworkers do and pushed for congressional recognition. He proposed April 18 because his father, Cliff Bosch, also a lineman, passed away on that date. On April 10, 2013, US Senate Resolution 95 officially designated April 18 as National Lineman Appreciation Day, a move driven in large part by the massive response to Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when line crews across the country worked around the clock to restore power to millions of people.

National Piñata Day celebrates the colorful candy-filled containers used in celebrations around the world. Piñatas likely originated in China, traveled through Europe, and were adopted and transformed in Latin America. The observance was created in 2016 by Amy Watkins, an American artist and blogger who posted on her blog “Cozy Reverie” that she couldn’t believe a holiday dedicated to piñatas didn’t already exist. With the help of some friends, she turned the idea into an actual celebration.

National Poem in Your Pocket Day* (Date Varies During National Poetry Month) was started in New York City in 2002 and taken national by the Academy of American Poets in 2008. It encourages people to carry a poem with them and share it throughout the day. In 2016, the League of Canadian Poets extended the day to Canada as well.

National Record Store Day* (Third Saturday of April and again the day after Thanksgiving) was founded in 2007 by a coalition of independent record store owners. The first official celebration took place in 2008, with Metallica meeting fans at Rasputin Music in San Francisco. Since then, the event has grown into a global celebration of vinyl culture, featuring limited-edition releases, artist performances, and in-store events. The day highlights the unique role independent record stores play in preserving music culture, from rare vinyl and album art to fan communities and local music scenes.

National Velociraptor Awareness Day highlights the gap between the real animal and its Hollywood depiction, since the actual velociraptor was roughly the size of a turkey, weighed about 15 kilograms, and was covered in feathers — nothing like the towering, scaly predators on screen.

Pet Owners Independence Day was created by Ruth and Thomas Roy of Wellcat Holidays, with their page dating back to 2002. On this day, dog and cat owners take the day off work while their pets go in their place, since most pets are jobless, sleep all day, and don’t even take out the trash. It’s a tongue-in-cheek celebration giving pet owners a guilt-free excuse to lounge around and do absolutely nothing.
