National and International Days on April 29

AMKD Awareness Day(Last Tuesday of April): Observed during National Minority Health Month, AMKD Awareness Day raises awareness about APOL1-mediated kidney disease, a condition that predominantly affects individuals of West and Central African descent. Mutations in the APOL1 gene can significantly increase the risk of developing severe kidney diseases, such as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Led by the American Kidney Fund, this day emphasizes the importance of early testing and greater public understanding of how genetic factors contribute to kidney health disparities.

International Dance Day: Established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, International Dance Day honors the universal language of dance and its role in human expression. The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a pioneer of modern ballet. This celebration highlights the emotional and artistic power of movement, encouraging people around the world to appreciate dance as a professional art form and a fundamental mode of communication.

International Wish Day: Launched in 2010 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, World Wish Day celebrates the global impact of granting life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. Inspired by the first wish granted to Christopher Greicius in 1980, the day reminds supporters of the profound hope, joy, and strength that a single granted wish can bring. Since its founding, Make-A-Wish has fulfilled over 500,000 wishes across nearly 50 countries.

National Peace Rose Day: National Peace Rose Day commemorates the introduction of the Peace Rose on April 29, 1945, by the Conard-Pyle Company. Developed by French horticulturist Francis Meilland before World War II, the rose became a symbol of hope and international cooperation. Cuttings were sent worldwide to preserve the rose during the conflict, and the naming of the “Peace” rose marked the fall of Berlin and the approach of peace. Today, the Peace Rose continues to symbolize resilience and the longing for global harmony.

National Shrimp Scampi Day: Celebrating a beloved seafood dish, National Shrimp Scampi Day is all about buttery, garlicky shrimp cooked in white wine and lemon. Although the name “scampi” originally referred to a type of small lobster, in American kitchens, the term has come to describe the style of preparation. This light yet flavorful dish pairs well with pasta, rice, or crusty bread and has become a favorite meal to enjoy with a chilled glass of white wine.

National Supply Chain Day: First celebrated in 2020, National Supply Chain Day highlights the vital role supply chain professionals play in keeping the global economy moving. Founded by a Georgia-based packaging company, the day aims to bring attention to the interconnected systems that ensure products—from food to medicine—reach consumers efficiently. It’s a reminder that every link matters and that disruptions in the supply chain impact us all.

National Zipper Day: On April 29, 1913, Gideon Sundback received the patent for the “Separable Fastener,” what we now call the zipper. National Zipper Day celebrates this often-overlooked invention that revolutionized clothing and accessories. While earlier inventors like Elias Howe and Whitcomb Judson laid the groundwork, Sundback’s improvements made the zipper reliable and practical for everyday use. Today, zippers are everywhere—from jackets to boots to bags—thanks to his innovation.

Viral Video Day: Founded in 2013, this day honors the creativity and spontaneity behind videos that capture the internet’s imagination. From heartwarming moments to hilarious blunders, viral videos bring people together in ways few other mediums can. The day celebrates the power of digital storytelling, recognizing that the most memorable videos often achieve fame unexpectedly and connect millions across the globe.

We Jump the World Day: Founded in 2016 by Team Farang, We Jump the World Day brings together parkour enthusiasts across the globe. This event celebrates the spirit of parkour, emphasizing the discipline’s focus on overcoming obstacles efficiently and creatively. Rooted in the teachings of David Belle in France during the 1990s, parkour has grown into a global movement, and this day encourages participants to jump, move, and connect worldwide.
