Origins of the Espresso Martini
The Espresso Martini was created by Dick Bradsell in the mid-1980s at the Soho Brasserie in London. The story goes that a young model walked into the bar and asked for a drink to “wake me up and then f**k me up.” Bradsell, working next to a new coffee machine and amidst a vodka craze, combined espresso, vodka, coffee liqueur, and sugar syrup, thus creating the Vodka Espresso, later known as the Espresso Martini.
What is an Espresso Martini?
An Espresso Martini is a popular cocktail made with:
- Espresso: Provides a strong, rich coffee flavor.
- Vodka: Adds a smooth, clean alcohol base.
- Coffee Liqueur: Enhances the coffee flavor and adds sweetness.
- Simple Syrup: Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the bitterness of the espresso.
This cocktail is typically shaken with ice and served in a martini glass, often garnished with a few coffee beans on top.
