How to Use Magic Write on Desktop App, Browser and Mobile
The process of using Magic Write is a bit different depending on the device used. Below you can find step-by-step guides on how to use the function on a Mac, PC and mobile devices.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using Magic Write on the Desktop App (Mac/PC)
The following instructions are applicable to any Canva project, not just Canva Docs, where the + sign in the left-hand margin is basically impossible to miss.
- Open a Canva project where you’d like to use Magic Write.
- Use shortcut Command + E (Mac) or CTRL + E (Windows) to open Canva Assistant.
- If you have a blank project or have not selected any text box, simply click on “Magic Write” and proceed to Step 4.
If, when using the CMD+E or CTRL+E shortcut, you have had a text box with pre-written text selected, the Canva Assistant will offer Magic Write different Magic Write functions, including “Summarize Text”, “Expand Text”, “Rewrite” and “Edit with Magic Write”. If you want to use AI to rewrite, summarize a text or expand on a text, simply click on the desired function in the Canva Assistant – that’s it! - However, in case you want AI to create a text from scratch, clicking on “Magic Write” will open a window that says “Use 5 or more words to describe what you want to write”. For best results, provide a clear and concise text prompt to guide the AI in generating content.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Magic Write on a Mobile Device
Using Magic Write on a mobile device (Android/iOS) is similar to the desktop experience. The main difference is that the + has been replaced by a symbol of a magnifying glass (🔍), like pictured below. A big difference, however, is that the lack of Canva Assistant on mobile devices means that you can only use the Magic Write function in a Canva Doc.
How to use Magic Write on a Mobile Device:
- In the Canva home menu, open a new Doc.
2. Now that you are in the Canva Doc menu (see below), choose a Doc type that suits your need (for this example, I am opening a blank Canva Doc)
3. Find and click the magnifying glass emoji in the lower menu in your Canva Doc (see picture below). Clicking it opens up a menu with Magic Write as one of the options (picture below #2)
4. Next, use 5 or more words to describe what you want the AI to write. In my example, I asked the AI to explain the benefits of Magic Write in five bullet points.
Note: Canva Free users only have 25 Magic Writes to use, whereas Canva Pro users can use 75 Magic Write uses every month!
5. Now you have a AI-created text about your topic that you can use or tweak as much as you want. Mission accomplished!

Hi Mark! Thanks for sharing your opinion. I agree with you. I tried their text-to-image feature when they first launched it, and it wasn’t impressive. Of course, it’s not Canva’s fault. I’m not sure if they’ve made any improvements since then. For now, I prefer using images created by people, not AI.
