What is the Wheel of Life?

The Wheel of Life is a powerful exercise designed to help you step back and look at your life as a whole, pinpointing the areas that might need a little more attention and care.

Think of it as a pie chart, with each segment representing a key area of your life. You rate your satisfaction in each area, usually on a scale from 1 to 10. It’s a simple yet effective way to visualize your life’s balance and figure out where to focus your efforts for improvement.

☸️ ☸️ ☸️

Using the Life Wheel might seem easy, but trust me, it can get quite intense. The assessment helps you take a closer look at yourself, revealing how you truly feel about each part of your life. This tool isn’t just another item on your daily checklist but a profound process of self-discovery.

Let’s say you’ve been putting a lot of energy into your work, but your health or relationships aren’t where you’d like them to be. The Wheel of Life assessment can be your guide. It’s a gentle nudge, a visual reminder saying, “Hey, maybe it’s time to give these areas a bit more attention!”

Remember, life doesn’t have to be perfect in every area. The goal isn’t to score top marks everywhere, but to ensure that no area is neglected and that you’re content with the overall picture. After all, balance is what we’re all striving for.

How to Use the Wheel of Life Assessment: Step-By-Step Guide

Filling out the Wheel of Life is a straightforward and insightful exercise. Here’s a simple guide to help you through it.

Remember, there’s no right or wrong here; it’s all about understanding your own life better. So, take a moment, relax, and begin this journey of self-discovery.

How to Complete the Wheel of Life

  1. Decide which areas of life you want to assess

To begin balancing your life using the Wheel of Life, the first step is to select the life areas you find most relevant. Remember, the key is personalization – choose a template that resonates with you. There are many versions available, each with different categories and different number of them. Pick one that aligns with what matters most in your life, as this will make the exercise more meaningful and effective for you.
  2. Set priorities for areas of life

After labeling each segment of the Wheel of Life, the next step is to prioritize these areas. Reflect on which aspect is currently most crucial for you.

Start by assigning the highest priority (number 1) to the most important area, such as ‘Family & Friends’ if it’s your top priority.

Then, continue ranking each area in order of importance to you. This process helps in focusing your efforts on areas that matter most in your life at this moment.
  3. Rate each area of your life on a scale from 1 to 10

Next, rate each area of your life on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. Think about where you currently stand in each area and assign a score. Once you’ve decided on a score, visually represent it by coloring in that section of the wheel.

For instance, a score of 10 means coloring the entire segment, while a score of 1 means coloring just a small part. This visual representation will help you see which areas are thriving and which need more attention.
  4. Set a goal for each area of your life

After evaluating each area of your life, it’s time to set goals for where you’d like to be in the future. This involves envisioning your ideal state in each life area. Setting clear goals helps you identify the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. It’s a crucial step in creating a focused plan for personal growth and improvement.
  5. Analysis

After assessing each life area, analyze the interconnectedness between them. Look for areas that might be improved simultaneously. For example, enhancing your physical health could positively impact your emotional well-being. Also, identify if any poorly balanced areas are adversely affecting others. This analysis will help you understand how different aspects of your life influence each other and can guide more effective goal setting.
  6. Make an actionable plan

The last and crucial step is creating an actionable plan for each life area. Consider specific steps you can take to improve each segment. Ask yourself: What actions will help raise my satisfaction level in this area? This step involves outlining concrete, achievable actions that will move you closer to your desired state in each part of your life. Your plan should be clear, focused, and tailored to your individual goals and circumstances.

Final words of advice: when filling in your very own Wheel of Life, the hardest part is to HONESTLY answer the questions when rating each area of your life. You should access each area based on the real life situation and not based on what you think you “should” answer.

Conclusion

The Wheel of Life, a.k.a. Life Balance Wheel, gives a holistic view on where the person is in their journey and what needs to be done in order to make progress towards a happier and more harmonious life. It is no wonder that many self-help gurus such as Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar have used versions of this tool.

Sometimes you might think that you have a problem in one area of life but the exercise shows you a totally different perspective.
