Below is a list of all national and international days observed on October 27, each followed by a short explanation of its meaning and purpose.

National & International Days on October 27

Cranky Co-Workers Day was created by Ruth and Thomas Roy of Wellcat Holidays, a couple known for inventing lighthearted and unusual observances. The day humorously recognizes that everyone has off days and that workplaces often include a mix of moods and personalities. Its purpose is to bring a bit of laughter to the workplace by acknowledging those moments of irritation that happen in any office. Rather than encouraging negativity, it invites people to handle tension with humor and patience, reminding everyone that empathy and good-natured fun can ease even a cranky day.

National American Beer Day highlights the variety and evolution of beer brewed in the United States, from the light, crisp lagers produced by major breweries to the inventive styles crafted by small, independent brewers. American beer reflects the nation’s diversity and regional character—ranging from classic mass-market lagers made with corn or rice to bold craft styles like American Pale Ales and IPAs that showcase distinctive hop flavors. The day draws attention to how American brewers have shaped global beer trends, developing new styles such as the California Common and hazy IPA, while preserving brewing traditions that date back to colonial times.

National Black Cat Day raises awareness about the unfair myths and superstitions that still affect black cats, especially near Halloween when such beliefs tend to resurface. The observance was founded in 2011 by Cats Protection, a feline welfare charity in the United Kingdom. The organization created the day after noticing that black cats were often overlooked for adoption compared to cats of other colors. The goal is to change perceptions, highlight their beauty, and encourage people to give these cats loving homes.

🐈‍⬛ A related observance, National Black Cat Appreciation Day, was created in 2011 by Wayne H. Morris in memory of his late sister and her beloved 20-year-old black cat, Sinbad. It shares the same purpose—honoring black cats and promoting adoption from shelters where they are often the last to find homes.

National Civics Day highlights the importance of civic education and active participation in democracy. Founded in 2021 by Long Island University’s Roosevelt School and The Society of Presidential Descendants, the observance encourages Americans to understand how their government works and why their involvement matters. The date honors the publication of the first Federalist Papers in 1787—key essays that helped shape the U.S. Constitution.

National Henry C. Ramos Day honors Henry Charles Ramos, a celebrated New Orleans bartender known for inventing the Ramos Gin Fizz in 1888. Ramos became famous for his dedication to perfecting this drink, which required vigorous shaking to achieve its smooth, frothy texture. The cocktail’s combination of gin, citrus, cream, egg white, and orange flower water reflected both his skill and the city’s mixology culture. The observance also marks the day in 1919 when Ramos served his final gin fizz before Prohibition forced his bar to close, turning the drink into a symbol of New Orleans’ golden age of cocktails.

National Mentoring Day highlights the life-changing value of mentorship and the role mentors play in helping others grow personally and professionally. The observance was created in 2014 by Chelsey Baker, a business mentor from the UK, and officially launched at the Houses of Parliament in 2016. It encourages people and organizations to see mentoring as a powerful way to make a positive difference in someone’s life.

National Parmigiano Reggiano Day reminds us how food can connect people even in difficult times. It celebrates Parmigiano Reggiano, the famous Italian cheese often called the “King of Cheeses.” After a powerful earthquake struck the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy in 2012, thousands of cheese wheels were damaged, and many cheesemakers faced losing their livelihoods. To help them, chef Massimo Bottura invited people around the world to cook a simple rice dish called riso cacio e pepe using the damaged cheese. His idea spread quickly, saving the producers. The Consortium of Parmigiano Reggiano later created this day to honor that act of solidarity and the long tradition of making this special cheese.

Navy Day honors the men and women who serve in the United States Navy and recognizes their vital role in protecting the country. It was first established in 1922 by the Navy League of the United States, a civilian organization that supports America’s sea services. The day reminds people that the Navy operates not only in times of war but also during peace—guarding the seas, assisting in humanitarian missions, and maintaining global security. It serves as a moment to show respect and gratitude for the courage, discipline, and commitment of all who wear the Navy uniform.

World Day for Audiovisual Heritage helps people understand why films, recordings, and broadcasts are important parts of our shared history. It was created by UNESCO in 2005 to remind the world that these materials capture voices, images, and moments that tell the story of modern life. The date marks the 1980 adoption of UNESCO’s Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images, the first global agreement to protect audiovisual records. Many of these materials are fragile and risk being lost forever due to decay or outdated technology. This day recognizes the vital work of archivists and cultural institutions that keep these memories alive for future generations.
