National Siblings Day is observed every year on April 10 to honor the bond between brothers and sisters. The date carries personal significance, as it marks the birthday of the holiday’s founder’s late sister, Lisette. While the day is recognized in parts of the United States and Canada, it is not yet federally recognized, though efforts are underway to change that.
The holiday was founded by Claudia Evart, a freelance paralegal from Manhattan, New York. After tragically losing both her brother and her sister in separate accidents at an early age, she was inspired to create a day dedicated to siblings. She established the Siblings Day Foundation in 1995 as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Over the years, the foundation has earned remarkable recognition. Three U.S. presidents have signed Presidential Messages praising its efforts, and governors in 49 states have issued official proclamations supporting the day. Beyond the United States, 14 countries including Australia, Canada, India, Japan, and the United Kingdom have begun celebrating it as well.
The holiday gained significant momentum in the 2000s, growing rapidly alongside the rise of social media. For over a decade it has been a top trending topic on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. It was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s show for three consecutive years and broadcast worldwide on Voice of America for six years.
Every April 10, social media feeds fill with photos and heartfelt messages as people honor their siblings. Unlike many informal calendar holidays, National Siblings Day is neither frivolous nor commercially motivated. Its origins are deeply personal, rooted in love and grief.
