April 7th is a great day to get together with your family and friends over a cup of coffee and cake. On this day, you have an excuse to cheat a little on your diet as we celebrate National Coffee Cake Day.

What Is Coffee Cake?

Coffee cake is a type of cake designed to be eaten alongside coffee. Despite its name, it doesn’t always contain coffee as an ingredient. Typically, coffee cake has a moist and tender crumb with a streusel topping made of sugar, cinnamon, and sometimes nuts. Some variations include a layer of fruit, nuts, or chocolate.

Origins of the Tradition

The tradition of enjoying coffee cake originated in Europe, particularly from Germany and Scandinavia.

In Germany, the practice of having coffee and cake is known as “kaffeeklatsch,” which is somewhat similar to Britain’s teatime. It refers to an informal social gathering where people enjoy tea or coffee and conversation.

In Scandinavia, the tradition is known as fika” in Sweden and “kaffebord” in Denmark. Fika is a cherished cultural ritual that involves taking a break to enjoy coffee, cake, or pastries while socializing with friends or colleagues. Kaffebord, on the other hand, is a Danish tradition where an elaborate spread of cakes and pastries is served, often accompanied by multiple cups of coffee.

Scandinavian and German immigrants brought their recipes and traditions to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time, these recipes evolved into the coffee cakes we know and love today.
